MIT寒假论文项目招生简介
课题简介
1.Climate Science
Studentslearn air pollution and climate change theory related to my research. The courseends with the development of mathematical models for air pollution scenarios. A"dimensioning and designing" component will be added for the summercourse. The students will specify the prototype design (for use in a3D printer)of a MEMS device for NOx (one of the chemical pollutants) sensing.
2.Concepts in Math
Eachweek one interesting and complex math problem in applied math concepts iscovered. The course spans Algebra (2),Calculus I (2), Art (1), Physics(1),Chemistry (1), Biology (1), Engineering(1)and Computer Science (1) for a totalof ten problems. Students complete 2-6other problems each week leading up tothe complex, challenge problem. Graphing and basic computer algorithms areinvolved.
These willprobably be the most interesting, fun and challenging math problems students willencounter.
3.Phytoremediation-a Biological and Chemical Approach to a Soil Science Project
Studentswill learn the basic science concepts needed as background for one of myresearch projects. Students will study thetopics that made the researchpossible. This is an interdisciplinary course involving various aspects of soiland plant science.
4.ScienceWonders
In this 10 weekcourse interesting phenomenon and occurrences are explained with science and abit of math. Four of the topics are gravity vortexes (where you can walksideways on level ground...optical physics+), mirages (once again, optics),auroras (more physics-electricity and magnetism!) and very cool weather events. Two more topics will be covered. One will be based on chemistry and the studentmay choose the sixth.
5.CalculusArt
In this coursestudents will see the geometric and curvilinear paths traced out by calculusequations. The materials coversintroductory calculus and is suitable for high school students who have donewell in standard 11th and 12th grade algebra courses.
6.ChemicalPhysics
This course coversthe topics present in both chemistry and physics. The topics and problems aredone first with a chemical emphasis, and then they are redone with a physicsemphasis. This enables students to viewthe same problem from different scientific perspectives.
7.ChemistryLabs 1
Introductorychemistry labs, typically done in a first semester frosh course, that can bedone with materials that can be bought for use in the home are completed. These are paired with real world chemicaldemonstrations by the instructor and shown online. Two experiments are done via a Skype sessionin an actual commercial or academic laboratory.
8.ChemistryLabs 2
Introductory(first semester in college) and more advanced (AP Chemistry or 2nd semester)labs are done with materials that can be bought for use in the home. Online lab demonstrations reinforce thetheories learned in the course. Two-four actual lab experiments are done viaSkype from an actual commercial or academic laboratory.
